Western lifestyle celebrated at Way Out West Weekend

Family-friendly rodeo and competitive equestrian events were the highlights of the Way Out West Weekend, held Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18 at the Ramona Outdoor Community Center.

The two-day event was a fundraiser for the philanthropic work of the Ramona Rodeo Foundation, including the funding of local nonprofits, sponsorships and educational scholarships, according to event organizers Selena Roberts, Jeanne Malone and Rachelle Laws.

Saturday’s activities included barrel racing, pole bending and team penning, and well as equine wellness presentations.

On Sunday, the first Steve Tellam Memorial Team Penning event was held. The top five teams now qualify for the Ramona Rodeo. The late Steve Tellam and his father, Willy Tellam, both of Ramona, were heavily involved in team penning, sorting and helping youngsters in 4H, FFA and the Ramona Rodeo.

The Ramona Rodeo Jr. Barrels Qualifier will be held at the Fred Grand Area on Saturday, Aug. 16.

The Steve Tellam Memorial Team Penning will take place prior to the Rodeo Performance each night. The Ramona Rodeo will be held Aug. 21-23.
