What luxury accessories ward off bad luck in the Year of the Dragon 2024?

Lunar New Year is about celebrating prosperity and cultivating good luck, but there’s also the tradition of protecting oneself from bad omen and harm. In any particular year, some Chinese zodiac signs may not jive with the zodiac animal of that year. This is known as Fan Tai Sui, or clashing with the Grand Duke of Jupiter. This can mean anything from losing money and fortune to taking hard hits on one’s career or health.
As a rule of thumb, those whose zodiacs coincide with the year’s animal are automatically in conflict with Tai Sui. This means that in the coming Year of the Dragon, those born in the Year of the Dragon and those born in the Year of the Dog, Ox and Rabbit will have to keep an eye out for bad luck.

There are several ways to mitigate this. You can cancel this bad energy with an auspicious event such as getting married, giving birth, having a big birthday celebration or making a major purchase such as a flat. You can also pay your respects to Tai Sui at the temples.

Colourstrology: what is your Chinese zodiac sign’s lucky colour for 2024?

But one easy and fun way to keep bad luck at bay is to identify the zodiac that protects you, then wear a talisman in the animal’s likeness. Some may wish to carry a picture in their wallet or set their lucky zodiac animal as their phone’s wallpaper. But what better reason do you need to buy a piece of jewellery or a watch for good luck, prosperity and great health?

Here, we take a look at what accessories will help bring good fortune to the four zodiac signs that need it the most in the Year of Dragon, according to fortune teller Mak Ling-ling’s 2024 annual fortune book.

Year of the Dragon

Dragons born in 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 and 2012 are celebrating their cycle this year, which means it’s been a full 12 years since the last time we celebrated it. The rooster is the dragon’s lucky star; its spirited features and red crown evoke a sense of positive energy.

To keep bad luck at bay, consider Louis Vuitton’s Vivienne Rooster Pendant, created in a mix of yellow, white and pink gold. Vuitton’s adorable Vivienne has a beautiful head of feathers in pink and red lacquer and diamonds. A total of 26 red spinels add sparkle and cheery energy.

Year of the Dog

Cartier’s Panthère de Cartier range is the perfect set of jewels to covet for those born in the Year of the Dog. Photo: Handout

Dogs born in 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 and 2018 can protect themselves this year with tiger and horse accessories.

Though not quite a tiger, but a big cat nonetheless, Cartier’s Panthère de Cartier range of jewels and timepieces is perfect for keeping things in line. Opt for a simple yellow gold bangle featuring two panther heads with tsavorite garnets for eyes or a full diamond pave ring.

There’s perhaps no one that makes horse-themed accessories quite like Hermès. From silks and watches to the budget-friendly Hermès horse Apple Watch dial, here’s to prancing around in style.

Year of the Ox

Those born in the Year of the Ox may consider a mouse talisman – perhaps a piece from Gerald Genta featuring the most famous of the animal, Mickey Mouse. Photo: Gerald Genta

Oxen born in 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 and 2009 can think of the mouse as their guardian angel this year. And what better mouse to keep your spirits up throughout the year than the most magical mouse of them all?

Gerald Genta celebrated 50 years of creating high-complication Mickey Mouse watches in 2022, and continues to spark joy with its Disney designs. Not your run-of-the-mill Mickey watch from the amusement park gift shop, Genta’s Mickey Mouse timepiece features complications ranging from retrograde hands to jumping hours.

Year of the Rabbit

Those born in the Year of the Rabbit can wear talismans that involve pigs, such as this Flying Pig Bo Bo from Qeelin. Photo: Qeelin

Those born in the Year of the Rabbit in 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999 and 2011 can take advantage of wearing this adorable Flying Pig Bo Bo pendant from Qeelin. Paved in white and black diamonds, this pig has a pair of wings that will help you fly high in the new year.

What about other zodiac signs?

For something Chinese-themed, consider Tiffany & Co.’s Woven Key collection. Photo: Handout

As for the rest of the zodiac that doesn’t need extra protection from bad luck, there’s no reason not to kick off the Year of the Dragon with a bit of sparkle. Rather than focusing on auspicious animal-themed pieces, opt for precious alloys and precious gems to usher prosperity into the new year.

Why pearls never go out of style – and have come a long way

Tiffany & Co.’s latest Woven Key collection arrives just in time for the new year. The Keys collection has been a classic at Tiffany since 2009 – for the Lunar New Year, the jewellery takes inspiration from the Chinese rope knot motif and breathes a touch of luxe into the design with a sprinkle of diamonds.

The colour red is often associated with Lunar New Year, for it is an auspicious colour in Chinese tradition; Messika’s bracelet plays with several of these auspicious elements. Photo: Handout

Messika’s Lucky Move Red Cord bracelet provides all the auspicious elements that the Lunar New Year calls for. A round charm, which represents completeness and togetherness in Chinese tradition, is worn on a red cord which, as we all know, is the must-wear colour of the festive season. The design of rose gold accented with diamonds signals good fortune and prosperity.
