Who is … Steffi Graf? Tennis legend features in Jeopardy! clue

A tennis fan scored big on Jeopardy! this week. (For a moment, anyway.)

On Monday’s episode of the American game show, 22-time Grand Slam singles champion Steffi Graf made an appearance as the $1,000 answer in the category “Women in Sports.”

The answer, in the opening “Jeopardy!” round of play, also named-dropped Graf’s fellow Hall of Famer husband, saying: “In 2001, it was love all when Andre Agassi married this German tennis star.”

Lloyd Sy, a professor of American literature originally from Rockford, Ill., answered the question correctly, which helped contribute to his $3,400 total at the end of the opening round.

(Whether the subject was worthy of $1,000—purportedly, reserved for the most difficult topics—is another matter entirely. We would’ve gone for the Golden Slam.)

But Sy’s tennis knowledge, unfortunately, didn’t help him win it all.

Though he entered the Final Jeopardy round in first place with $19,800 to his name, he ultimately finished in third after losing $14,000 of that total on an incorrect guess to the final answer.
