Bella’s prom outfit required additional layers because it was so cold on the day of filming.
Chuck said that landing on Bella’s prom outfit was somewhat stressful.
“I don’t think I had anything that was really resonating with me up until maybe two weeks before we shot that scene,” she said.
“I had no idea it was going to be below freezing and with wind, I mean, it was the most awful night,” she recalled. “It became apparent that I needed a layer for her.”
To keep Stewart warm during the shoot, the actor wore gray footless tights. Chuck said she found Bella’s tiered navy dress “in dare I say TJ Maxx or something like that and I doctored it a little bit.”
The cardigan worn by Stewart was modified, too.
“I did custom work on that,” Chuck said. “It was like an old granny cardigan, but when I saw it, I was like, OK, it’s got some elements. It’s got something that she’d find in the thrift store, which is where this girl would shop, and it’s got a bit of sparkle.”
To avoid the cardigan looking too matronly, Chuck adjusted the length.
“We shortened it and made it more of a bolero and voila, the rest is history,” she said.
The blue, gray, and white colors of Bella’s prom outfit also symbolize her becoming part of the Cullen family’s world.
