
WINNETKA, IL — A Winnetka homeowner and a car thief engaged in an early morning shootout on Memorial Day, police said.
No one was injured in the exchange of gunfire, which took place shortly after 5 a.m. and resulted in the closure of Sheridan Road between Willow Road and Ash Street, according to police.
Three unidentified car thieves were trying to steal a car in the 400 block of Sheridan Road when the armed homeowner interrupted them, police said.

“During the encounter, the homeowner exchanged gunfire with one of the offenders,” police said.
Police said more information — including a description of the suspects — would be released to the public later in the investigation.

The village’s parade, which is due to begin at 10 a.m., would not be interrupted by the investigation, according to a statement from police.
“We believe this is an isolated event,” police said. “The Memorial Day Parade and Observance will proceed as scheduled and will feature an ample police and security presence for the safety of all participants.”
