Wisconsin basketball is nearly back for regular season action. Before then, the Wisconsin Badgers will host an exhibition game against the UW-Stevens Point Pointers. Although the matchup will not count in the standings, it will provide the best look yet at a Wisconsin roster with several newcomers.

Wisconsin Continues WIAC Exhibition Tradition

The Badgers have hosted an exhibition against a team from the Division 3 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in 18 consecutive seasons. Wisconsin has won each of those games, including its sole previous matchup against the Pointers, which UW won 80-54 in 2011.

Each year since UW head coach Greg Gard has been at the helm, this annual exhibition series has served as Wisconsin’s annual Cancer Awareness Game.

Transfer Portal Addition Looks to Make Splash in Madison

After a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, Gard looked to the transfer portal to improve his roster. Fortunately for the head coach entering his ninth season, he may have found exactly what he was looking for.

AJ Storr, a sophomore originally from Rockford, Illinois, chose to continue his playing career in Madison after a coaching change at his previous school. St. John’s fired head coach Mike Anderson and hired Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Rick Pitino as his replacement.

The newcomer on the Wisconsin Badgers roster is expected to make an immediate impact. The All-Big East Freshman team selection was a highly-touted prospect out of both high school and the transfer portal. In his lone season at St. John’s, the six-foot-six-inch, 200-pound wing showcased his ability to score from anywhere on the court. He averaged 10.5 points per game in Big East play and led all freshmen by shooting 40.4% from beyond the arc.

Storr may be an immediate starter or come off the bench for Wisconsin. Regardless, he will play something that resembles starting minutes from the get-go.

Freshman Additions for the Wisconsin Badgers

Gard added three freshmen in the 2023 recruiting class. Forward Gus Yalden, guard John Blackwell Jr., and forward Nolan Winter made up the seventh-ranked class in the Big Ten, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. 

Although Yalden was the more heralded recruit, Winter and Blackwell may see more immediate playing time. In a recent press conference, Gard went out of his way to praise Winter and Blackwell. If they can prove their chops defensively, the two freshmen may be staples of a Badgers rotation that has otherwise lacked depth over the course of recent seasons.
