MADISON (WLUK) — The holiday season is often referred to as “the most wonderful time of the year” — but for some people, it’s one of the most difficult.
Gov. Tony Evers and First Lady Kathy Evers shared a video message Friday, encouraging Wisconsinites to take care of their mental health, check up on their loved ones and utilize available mental health resources as the holidays draw closer.
According to a survey from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 64% of people with mental illness reported their conditions worsen around the holiday season.
Stress, financial strain, loneliness, grief, depression, high expectations and increased substance misuse are just a few factors that tie into what NAMI refers to as the “holiday blues.”
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) offers these tips to help manage manage mental health issues during the holidays.
- Spend time with people who love and support you.
- Simplify your commitments. Avoid overbooking yourself, and do not feel guilty about making time for yourself.
- If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation, and do not drink if you are feeling down.
- Take time to exercise, move, and get outside if the weather is nice. Enjoy plenty of sunlight and eat healthy foods.
- Make sure you’re getting enough sleep and prioritizing rest when needed.
- Try to be patient and use your sense of humor.
- Stick to a budget and set realistic holiday expectations.
- Volunteer your time and talents. Helping people in need makes you feel good.
“If you’re able, check in on your neighbors, friends, and loved ones, and no matter what challenges you’re facing, it’s okay to share your feelings and ask for help,” the First Lady said in the video message.
Troubling statistics and a growing demand for mental and behavioral health services prompted Gov. Evers to declare 2023 the “Year of Mental Health” in Wisconsin.
