Wisconsin families to get help with food insecurity this summer

MADISON, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Wisconsin families experiencing food insecurity can expect some additional support this summer. The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service approved the state’s plan for the summer electronic benefit transfer program. This is meant to help families feed kids during the summer through a $120 credit. Most families eligible will receive them automatically through state agencies looking to identify kids who may qualify.

This additional support is something TJ Atkins, with the Community Table, says can really help families that are struggling, “It helps to make better choices than in terms of where their funds need to be when you’re trying to, especially as we get to the summer and it starts to get hot. Like, ‘Do I need AC fans,’ things like that… ‘What are gas prices look(ing) like?’ So, when you have this additional funding to kind of Offset some of that.”

This is a one-time benefit and families are expected to receive the credit in late June.
