Wisconsinites set these 7 foodie Guinness World Records, and no, they’re not all cheese-based

Guinness World Records, as of 2022, tracks more 55,000 records that have been set across the globe.

Wisconsinites have contributed to the breaking of a number of these records over the years, including the longest video game marathon of Minecraft in 2016, the most torches extinguished by fire-eating in one minute in 2018 and even the world’s oldest groom, getting married at the age of 103 in 1984.

But the creativity of Wisconsin residents doesn’t stop there, with the state holding a number of unique food related records, and they’re not all cheese related.

Hope you’re hungry, here are seven food-related Guinness World Records broken by Wisconsin residents.

Knocking the largest bowl of cereal out of the park, and making a statement

In 2020, a group of students from Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) created the world’s largest bowl of cereal, using 9,000 pounds of Cocoa Puffs.

Joseph Carey, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering at the time, came across a listing for a free pallet of the breakfast cereal, which was unable to be boxed and sold due to a missing tamper seal.

Carey took the opportunity to not only break a world record but also make a statement about the issue of food waste in America.

With the help of 80 volunteers and MSOE classmates, Carey turned a dumpster into a cereal bowl and filled it with the cereal and over 440 gallons of powdered milk. The total record-breaking weight came to 9,045 pounds, beating the previous record of 3,504 pounds.

Afterwards, Carey found a place where the cereal could be composted and turned into topsoil.

Fastest gravy … drinker?

Steven Ruppel of Wausau currently holds the record for fastest time to drink one liter of gravy. In 2018, Ruppel achieved the record by downing the gravy in 1 minute and 12.5 seconds.

“I broke this record because I like gravy and usually eat a lot of it,” Ruppel told Guinness.

He used a little over four cans of Campbell’s chicken gravy to make up the full liter, and had to drink through a straw that fit the Guinness World Records’ size requirements.

The attempts had to be completed in under three minutes to qualify as a record.

You knew we’d have it: Longest string cheese

In 2021, Weyauwega Star Dairy broke it’s own previous world record for the world’s longest piece of string cheese.

The dairy previously set the record twice before, once in 1995 and again in 2006 with a 2,000-foot string cheese. This time around, the dairy set the world record with 3,832 feet or equal to 30,000 individual sticks.

The record-breaking string cheese took around five hours to make and 90 minutes to unravel. The cheese was debuted with a long line of local residents, standing seven feet apart across three blocks, each holding a share of it.

We like our cheese wide, as well as long: Largest cheese platter

Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin in Madison broke the record for the largest cheese platter in 2018.

The cheese platter came to 4,437 pounds and featured around 145 varieties of Wisconsin-produced cheese. One wheel of cheese, a Mammoth Cheddar, weight 2,064 pounds on its own.

The event helped raise money for the Great American Milk Drive, an organization that provides milk to Feeding America and other food aid programs.

Largest charcuterie board, for when you’ve got that one friend coming over

Dufeck Wood Products, a manufacturer of custom wood products in Denmark, aided in setting the new record for the largest charcuterie board earlier this year.

Dufeck Wood Products provided the wooden boards that the 760 pound, 20-by-14-foot snack spread sat on.

Boarderie and esteemed sponsors unveiled the record-breaking charcuterie board, inspired by Boarderie's best-selling Arte board, measuring 20 feet by 14 feet on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023 in Palm Beach, Fla. (James McEntee/AP Images for Boarderie)

On Oct. 4, Boarderie, known for its pre-arranged artisan cheese and charcuterie boards, debuted the new record-breaking board, beating the previous record of 441 pounds.

Afterwards, the food was donated to The Lord’s Place, a nonprofit organization in Palm Beach aiming to end homelessness.

Longest meat stick, because you need something to go with the long cheese

Wenzel’s Farm, a snack meat manufacturer in Marshfield, celebrated it’s 75th anniversary in Aug. by breaking the world record for longest meat snack stick.

The company partnered with Devro, a manufacturer of collagen casings and films, to create a casing strong enough and long enough to hold the 314-foot-long snack stick.

The record-breaking meat stick was debuted at an event surrounded by Marshfield’s community residents. After the event, everyone in attendance was invited to take a piece of the snack meat home.

Big Mac guy not only sets record, but continues to maintain it

Donald Gorske from Fond du Lac set the record for most Big Macs eaten in a lifetime in 1999 with 15,490 burgers and has since continued to break his own record.

In January, he did it again, updating the total to 33,400 in more than 50 years of eating Big Macs almost every day.

“This was never a record for one day just to get into the record book but rather an every day record, day after day,” Gorske told Guinness. “Now after more than 50 years of eating the same meal every day, I ask myself, ‘Where did the time go?’”
