Woman dies after being hit by car while trying to help injured dogs, police say


JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Gray News) – An elderly woman in Florida died Tuesday night after she was hit by a car while trying to help two injured dogs in the middle of the road.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 9 p.m. in the Fort Caroline area.

Officers said the woman, believed to be in her 80s, was with her husband when they found two dogs that were hit by a car in the center median on Mount Pleasant Road.

The woman was attempting to cross the street to render aid to the dogs when she ended up being hit by a four-door sedan.

The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital where she died.

Authorities did not immediately identify the woman or give an update on the dogs’ condition.

Police said the driver of the vehicle was cooperating with their investigation.
