Woman rescues baby ducks stuck in storm drain near apartment complex

One duckling saved from storm drain on Mallette Dr

VICTORIA, Texas — A local woman sprang into action last week after discovering three baby ducks trapped in a storm drain near her apartment complex.

Lauren Cantu, who lives at The Landing Apartments on Mallette Drive, said she heard faint noises coming from the drain and quickly realized the sounds were from distressed ducklings. She snapped a photo and immediately decided to intervene.

Cantu contacted both the local game warden and Victoria City Public Works for assistance in rescuing the trapped birds.

“The game warden was off duty, and he still came out to look,” Cantu said. “Just to help, and it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, she’s crazy, we’re not going to check it out.’ They were actually trying to help.”

Cantu’s friend, Joseph, also stepped in to help. He managed to save one of the ducklings, but by the time they tried to retrieve the other two, they were nowhere to be found.

“It’s so sad to see the strays and everything,” Cantu said. “Even if you can’t help, just help in some way.”

Efforts to contact the city and the game warden for details on how similar wildlife situations are handled are still underway.

This story is developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
