WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BEGINS #HLWBB PLAY ON THURSDAY

DAYTON, Ohio – The IUPUI women’s basketball team will begin Horizon League play on Thursday, November 30 when they travel to Dayton, Ohio to face Wright State. The Jags fell in a close matchup to Ohio, Wednesday, November 26, 75-71 and they look to bounce back into the win column when they tip off against the Raiders at 7:00 PM on ESPN+.

The Raiders enter the matchup on a four game win streak with an overall record of 4-2. Wright State has earned wins over Mount Vernon Nazarene, Indiana State, Slippery Rock and Marshall.

Katie Davidson made her IUPUI debut in a loud way and continues to lead the Jags. The junior transfer from Miami (Ohio) sat out last season for personal reasons but made her presence known with 32 points and seven rebounds in the season opener against Eastern Illinois. She followed that performance with 23 points and five rebounds at No. 7 Ohio State. Davidson has been a consistent starter for the Jags and leads the team in scoring with 16.2 points per game, ranking her at fourth in the Horizon League.

Graduate student Jazmyn Turner recorded a double-double in the opening game of the season with 19 points and 17 rebounds. She totaled seven points and two rebounds before suffering an injury in the first quarter at Ohio State and has missed the last four games. Turner was named to the #HLWBB Preseason All-League First Team after averaging a team-high 14.9 points with a second-best 5.8 rebounds per game this past season.

Since Turner’s injury, Abby Wolterman entered the starting five and has stepped up for the Jags. The sophomore recorded a career-high 16 points in the Jaguar’s loss at Ohio and is second on the team in rebounds per game with an average of 5.0.

IUPUI returns just four players from the 2022-23 season: Jaci Jones, Logan Lewis, Turner and Abby Wolterman. Head coach Bruce added a strong recruiting class with freshman Kace Urlacher, Alexa Hocevar, Azyah Newson-Cole, Kaylin Moorehead and Brooklyn Stubblefield. The Jags added several from the transfer portal as well including sophomore Faith Stinson, juniors Camron Blank and Davidson and graduates Tahlia Walton and Jaela Johnson.

Coach Bruce’s squad is looking to hunt their way through the Horizon League standings this season as they were picked to finish ninth of 11 teams in the conference, according to the league’s coaches. IUPUI finished third in the regular season standings during the 2022-23 season with a 13-7 record. The Jags entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and were shocked in the quarterfinal round by the No. 6 seed Purdue Fort Wayne.
