Women’s Basketball Dominates Eastern Mennonite in Season Opener – James Madison University Athletics


HARRISONBURG, Va. – All 13 players who entered the game for James Madison scored in a 104-31 season-opening win over Eastern Mennonite on Monday night inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
 
JMU moves to 1-0, winning its fifth season-opener in the past six seasons. EMU begins the 2023-24 campaign 0-1 and will return to the hardwood on Friday to face McDaniel College.
 
Five Dukes scored in double digits, led by redshirt junior Jamia Hazell with 17 points, followed by classmate Kseniia Kozlova, who shot a perfect 6-of-6 against the Royals. Additionally, junior Mikaya Tynes (11), sophomore Chloe Sterling (10) and junior Ashanti Barnes (9) all registered career highs in points, while redshirt junior Olivia Mullins dished out five assists in the win.

Defensively, Barnes nearly recorded a double-double with 10 boards to go along with her nine points. Sterling hauled in a personal-best nine boards and had a pair of steals off the bench.
 
For EMU, Jeriyah Osborne finished with 10 points and three assists, leading the Royals in both categories. Jayla Gray finished with a pair of rebounds, blocks and steals.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

  • The Dukes opened the game on an 18-0 run before the Royals broke through with 2:41 left in the quarter.
  • Kozlova led JMU in scoring with eight points and was one of eight Dukes to tally a score in the opening frame.
  • JMU shot 11-for-21 (.524) in the first to make it a 25-5 game at the break.

 
Second Quarter

  • EMU’s Mya Hamlet added four points and an assist in the frame as the Royals put up 12 points in the quarter.
  • Hazell scored 10 out of the Dukes’ 20 points and pulled down four rebounds in the fourth as the lead grew to 45-17 at halftime.

Third Quarter

  • JMU scored 28 points in the paint, while graduate student Carole Miller recorded six in the period.
  • Eleven Dukes combined for 37 points in the third to increase their lead to 82-22.

 
Fourth Quarter

  • Sterling helped the Dukes cruise to a 104-31 victory with eight fourth-quarter points.
  • Freshmen Atiana Williams and Jada Mills chipped in with four and three points, respectively.

 
GAME NOTES

  • James Madison leads the all-time series against Eastern Mennonite 11-2.
  • JMU held the advantage on the glass, 71-23. Seventy-one rebounds are the most in program history. The previous record was 68, achieved twice: La Salle (Dec. 12, 1977) and Delaware State (Nov. 30, 1979).
  • Last year, the Dukes’ season-best was 57 boards against Longwood on Nov. 17. 
  • Head Coach Sean O’Regan is now 5-3 in season openers at the helm of the program, winning five of the last six.
  • Tynes recorded a career-high six rebounds to go along with her personal-best 11 points.
  • With 104 points, JMU has recorded 100 points or more in a game 11 times in its program history.
  • JMU also set a record for margin of victory, outscoring EMU by 73 points. The previous record was 67 against Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 7, 1996, when the Dukes outscored the Hawks 95-28.

 
UP NEXT
The Dukes will host Toledo on Wednesday, Nov. 8, as part of the MAC-SBC Challenge. Game time against the Rockets is set for 7 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
