EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The Bellarmine University women’s basketball team was in striking distance of Evansville at the start of the fourth quarter, and the Knights seized the opportunity to overtake the Purple Aces.
On Wednesday night in the Meeks Family Fieldhouse, visiting Bellarmine outscored Evansville by 14 in the final period in rallying to secure its first win of the season with a 64-58 victory over the Purple Aces.
Senior forward Cam Browning was only one board shy of a double-double after tallying a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds for Bellarmine (1-4), which defeated Evansville (1-5) for the second straight season. Sophomore guard Miyah Brown blocked a career-high four shots while adding 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting with six rebounds, sophomore forward Paetynn Gray posted 13 points and six rebounds, and junior guard Hope Sivori grabbed a career-high eight rebounds while distributing five assists.
Bellarmine didn’t score more than 15 points in any of the first three quarters, but when it mattered most, the Knights piled up 23 in the last stanza. BU hit nine of its 16 shots in the period and limited Evansville to only 3-for-14 shooting in the frame.
With around 30 seconds remaining in the third, Bellarmine trailed by 10, but Brown sank a short jumper just ahead of the buzzer and Sivori connected with Browning to open the fourth as the Knights came alive. A steal by Browning on the press led to a layup by senior guard Ashlee Harris for a 54-53 lead with 4:41 left.
Bellarmine led the rest of the way. Sivori spun in the lane and converted a layup with about two minutes left, and Gray buried a 3-pointer with just under 30 seconds remaining that pushed the advantage to 61-55. Evansville responded with a 3-pointer, but junior guard Hayley Harrison sank a free throw with seven seconds left that sealed it.
Bellarmine will play at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Wofford.
