Women’s Basketball Drops Non-Leaguer in Cleveland, 96-57 – Central Michigan University Athletics

CLEVELAND — Central Michigan Women’s Basketball fell, 96-57, at Cleveland State Saturday afternoon at the Wolstein Center.

The Chippewas (1-3) recovered from an 11-0 start by the Vikings (2-1) to work back into a three-point deficit, 25-22, with 6:43 to play in the second. At that point, CMU was three-for-six from beyond the arc with seven different players finding a bucket through the first 13 minutes and change.

A 15-4 run by CSU came in response to the rally to mark a 44-30 halftime margin. Junior Tiana Timpe‘s (Stockton, Ill. / Stockton) second three-pointer of the first half stood as the last points for the Chippewas ahead of an extended drought that lasted well into the third quarter as Cleveland State scored 17 unanswered points in four minutes.

After just eight fouls were called against Central Michigan in the first half, eight more were tallied in the third quarter alone for foul trouble to plague the Chippewas in the fourth quarter and deny an opportunity at another rally.

By game’s end, sophomore Madisen Wardell (Detroit, Mich. / Edison) reached into double-figures with 10 points and overcame a one-for-seven start from the field. Junior Karrington Gordon (Detroit, Mich. / Lincoln Park) and freshman Desrae Kyles (Benton Harbor, Mich. / Benton Harbor) came off the bench for nine and seven points, respectively, the latter another new career high for the freshman center.

Central Michigan Women’s Basketball heads to UW-Milwaukee next Saturday (Nov. 25, Noon ET), then return to McGuirk Arena Dec. 2 (1 p.m.) for the final home bout of 2023 against Indiana State.
