Women’s Basketball Hosts Quinnipiac in Home Opener


CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women’s basketball will return to Cambridge, Mass. to host Quinnipiac for their first home contest of 2023-24 on Sunday, November 12.  Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. ET inside Lavietes Pavilion and on ESPN+.  The Crimson will look to improve to 2-1 on the year and win their second straight home opener.    

What to Know

  • Harvard opened up their 2023-24 season and the second year under head coach Carrie Moore with two nonconference matchups on the road.  The Crimson stand at 1-1 on the season following a loss to No. 14 Maryland and their first win of the year on Thursday, November 9 against crosstown foe, Boston College.   
  • The last time out the Crimson picked up their first win of the year besting Boston College, 66-59, in come from behind fashion.
  • Falling behind by as much as 19 in the contest, the Crimson locked down on defense and hit several clutch late game buckets to power past the Eagles on their home floor.   
  • Harmoni Turner once against led the way for Crimson in scoring during the contest, registering a season-high 26 points and adding seven rebounds to her stat line.  The junior co-caption has led the squad in scoring in both early season contests, averaging 22 points. 
  • With the 18- and 26-point performances, Turner is now just 22 points away from reaching the career milestone of 1000 points. 
  • Two additional Crimson players joined Turner in double digit scoring with Elena Rodriguez registering 14 points followed by Saniyah Glenn-Bello with 10. 
  • Rodriguez has had a solid start to her junior campaign averaging 12 points and 5.5 rebounds through the teams two contests.  Rodriguez led the Crimson in rebounds with 8 and assists with 3 in last night’s matchup against Boston College.
  • First-year Abigail Wright has made her presence on the team known early in her first season by contributing a total of 19 points and 14 rebounds in the Crimson 1-1 start.  11 of the Wright’s rebounds have come on the offensive end. 
  • The Crimson season will consist of 13 nonconference matchups before it begins conference play on Saturday, January 6 against Yale. 
  • Sunday’s contest will be one of two nonconference home games that the Crimson will host.  Following their matchup against the Bobcats, Harvard will then welcome University of Michigan to Lavietes Pavilion on Saturday, December 2. 
  • As Harvard returns for their second year under Carrie Moore the squad looks to build on its success and history from last season.  The Crimson finished the year 20-12 overall and 9-5 in league play.
  • The Crimson reached new heights last year by posting a 20-win season for the first time since 2016-17, making its first Ivy Madness championship game appearance, and advancing to the fourth round of a postseason for the first time in program history with its trip to the WNIT Great 8.
  • Posting its, at the time, highest NET Ranking in program history, the Crimson checked in at No. 89 following its win over Princeton in the first Ivy game of the season.  Harvard continued to climb in the rankings throughout the season and ultimately ended the year at No. 71.
  • Besting a previous high of 18, Moore became the winningest first-year head coach in Harvard history.
  • The Crimson returns its three All-Ivy accolade recipients in Harmoni Turner (First-Team All-Ivy), Lola Mullaney (Second-Team All-Ivy), and Elena Rodriguez (Honorable Mention All-Ivy).  The Harvard trio also all ranked inside the top-13 in scoring within the Ivy League. 
  • The Crimson returns eight players from last year’s roster and welcomes three first-years and a junior transfer.
  • After a strong high school career, first-year Karlee White was recently tabbed No. 11 on The Athletic Women’s College Basketball Top 20 Freshmen list. 
  • The Crimson will look to even yet another all-time series as they face off against Quinnipiac for the eighth time in history.  Harvard currently trails the Bobcats 3-4. 
  • The matchup will be the first between the two squads since November of 2019 where the Crimson came out on top, 77-68. 

Next Up

The Crimson will go back on the road for a rematch of the 2023 WNIT Round of 32 matchup against UMass Amherst.  The battle of the two Massachusetts squads is set for Thursday, November 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the Mullins Center and on NESN+.
