Women’s Basketball Topples No. 3 Tampa in Spragins Hall Victory


HUNTSVILLE | The UAH women’s basketball team upended No. 3 Tampa by a final score 65-59 on Saturday afternoon in nonconference action on the final day of the GSC-SSC Crossover, presented by the Huntsville Sports Commission. UAH improves to 1-1, while UT slides to 3-2.
 
This is UAH women’s basketball’s first win over a ranked opponent since topping No. 19 Lee on Feb. 12, 2022, and this is also the program’s first win over a top-10 team since beating No. 9 Lee on Feb. 9, 2020.
 
Junior Jesse Jennings guided the Chargers in the victory with a team-high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds. She went 4-for-6 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free throw line over 30 minutes of action.
 
Head coach Andrea Lemmond‘s squad featured a total of four players with 10 points or more on Sautrday, including Jennings (14), Andie Flatgard (13), Shauna Fletcher (11) and Elyse Hughes (10).
 
Fletcher’s 10-plus point performance was the first of her collegiate career.
 
Freshman Bella White pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, followed by Jennings and Hughes with seven boards apiece. Overall on the day, UAH outrebounded the Spartans 36-28.
 
The Chargers shot 47.7 percent (21-44) from the field and 50.0 percent (4-for-8) on three-pointers, while limiting the Spartans to a 36.7 percent (22-60) mark from the floor.
 
UAH is back at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall for a nonconference matchup on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against future Gulf South Conference member Trevecca Nazarene.
