
The UMBC Women’s Basketball team will make its first trip to the West Coast in nearly 35 years, and only its second ever, when it faces host Oregon State on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. EST in Corvallis.
The Retrievers only previous trip came in February 1989 when it played in the Great West Classic at U.S. International University in San Diego. They dropped contests to Portland State and Southern Utah.
UMBC is coming off a heartbreaking defeat to Loyola Maryland last Wednesday after the clock hit zero with UMBC up 48-47, but officials went to the monitor and ruled that UMBC committed a foul with 0.5 seconds left, and Loyola would hit both free throws to escape with a 49-48 win.
Jaliena Sanchez led the Retrievers (1-3) with 13 points four rebounds and three assists. Paloma Iradier had 10 points, six rebounds and two assists, while fellow Spaniard Carmen Yanez seven points, two assists and two rebounds.
Trinity Palacio had nine points, while Anna Blount added six points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists. UMBC held Loyola to 0-17 shooting from three point range in the contest.
Scouting Oregon State:
- The Beavers are currently 3-0 with a recent win against UC Davis (86-48).
- Timea Gardiner recorded her first double-double against UC Davis with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
- Sophomore forward Raegan Beers leads the team with points at 55, averaging 18.3 pts/g, and in rebounds with 13.0 reb/g.
- Junior guard Talia von Oelhoffen leads in assists with 11, averaging 3.7 ast/g.
