The Hope College women’s tennis team rolled on this weekend with a 8-1 win Saturday at Ohio Northern University.
Winning in Ohio for the second time in two days, the Flying Dutch raised their record to 2-1. On Friday, Hope downed The College of Wooster by a 9-0 margin.
Against Ohio Northern, the Flying Dutch jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping all doubles flights and never looked back.
At No. 3 doubles, freshman Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit HS) and sophomore Mallory Matthews (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) delivered an 8-1 drubbing that set the tone for the day.
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) and junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) won 8-4. The duo is now 22-4 when playing together, dating back to last year.
At No. 2 doubles, junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) and senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) won a tiebreak 7-5.
Coffey carried the momentum into her singles match at the six line by burying her opponent with a double bagel.
Weeber also did not turn back at the third singles line, winning a dominant 6-2 first set and then serving up another bagel in the second.
Two more straight-set victories were claimed at the top two flights, with wins from Lopykinski and Moran.
Hope’s final win came at the fifth singles flight, where Matthews battled back from a set down to claim a 10-8 tiebreak victory over her opponent, clinching an 8-1 team victory.
The Flying Dutch will return home from their brief stint in Ohio to prepare for their first home match of the season on Saturday, Feb. 10, against Oberlin College (Ohio).
