Women’s Tennis Dominate Shaw in 6-1 Victory – Lenoir-Rhyne University Athletics


RALEIGH, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team finished its fall slate with a 6-1 victory over Shaw. 

In doubles, LR got off to a tough start as they were handed a 6-0 defeat in the No. 3 line. However, the No. 1 duo of Evgeniya Pugina and Nellie Wahlberg in addition to the No. 2 team of Alicia Wahlberg and Runa Müderrisoglu secured the point with a 6-1 and 6-3 victory, respectively. 

The strong finish in doubles carried LR’s momentum forward into singles as Müderrisoglu captured the second point with a 6-4, 6-2 result.  

Not all the singles matches were smooth sailing for LR as Pugina pulled out a competitive first set en route to her 7-5, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 singles line.  

Meanwhile, in No. 3 singles, Nellie Wahlberg needed three sets to get pass Anja Antonijevic. The freshman took the first set, 7-5, before she suffered a 6-4 defeat in the second set. However, the Stockholm, Sweden native closed out the match with an impressive 6-0 third set. 

After Nellie Wahlberg’s singles victory clinched the match for LR, her sister, Alicia, took care of business in straight sets with a 7-5, 6-2 result in the No. 4 line. Lastly, Alexa Allison closed the match for LR in No. 5 singles with a 7-5, 6-1 result. 

UP NEXT: The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team will be back in action in the new year for an exhibition at UNC-Asheville on Sunday, Feb. 4. Their next competitive match will be on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Mount Olive.
