Florida Gulf Coast University’s women’s tennis team fell 5-2 to Florida Atlantic at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center in Boca Raton, Florida.
“Today was a tough match against a solid team from FAU,” said FGCU head women’s tennis coach Courtney Vernon. “The ladies are making progress from last weekend. We are looking forward to playing at home this week.”
The Green & Blue (0-3) started strong as the doubles team of graduate student Ida Ferding and senior Fanny Norin earned a 6-3 victory at No. 1. Juniors Isabella Colmenares and Gabriela Macias clinched the doubles point with a hard fought 7-6 (0) decision.
The Owls (2-1) responded in singles, as Ferding fell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Colmenares kept the Eagles alive as she won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.
That would be the last point for FGCU as Florida Atlantic took charge as freshman Madeleine Joffe was defeated 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 and sophomore Amelia Kopel dropped her match 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4.
Fanny Norin pushed through three sets, winning the second one 6-3 but dropped the tiebreaker set 6-0 at No. 1. Lolo Glantz won her first set 6-4 but was defeated 6-2, 10-6 in the other sets.
The Eagles return home Sunday, Feb. 4 as they host Georgia State (0-1) at the FGCU Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
