WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Brown women’s tennis opened its spring season against Boston College in Weymouth, Mass. and fell, 4-3, in a close match on Sunday.
“Even though we didn’t come away with a team win, I’m so proud of the effort most of our players displayed in today’s match,” said Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser. “We started out with big deficits on two of the three doubles courts, but kept battling and figured out a way to close out the doubles point.”
Brown earned the first point of the match with two of the three doubles wins. Senior Ali Benedetto and junior Addison Ahlstrom first won at second doubles (6-4), then Boston College evened things up, then junior Lindsey Hofflander and sophomore Phoebe Peus took first doubles in a tiebreaker (7-6).
Boston College then won fourth and third singles to take a 2-1 match lead. Freshman Anne Yang knotted the match at two with a win at sixth singles (6-0, 6-4), and Peus secured first singles for a 3-2 advantage (6-3, 6-3). Boston College then won at fifth singles and Benedetto fell in a tiebreaker at second singles (3-6, 6-4, 7-5) as the Eagles took the match.
“In singles, Phoebe was impressive in her win against a high level opponent at line one singles,” said Schmidhauser. “Phoebe played with clarity and fearlessly attacked the net, closing the match with courage. Anne, in her first collegiate dual match, displayed a lot of fight and great problem-solving abilities in her win. In the deciding match at 3-3, Ali left everything on the court and I’m proud of her effort and fight. The team is motivated to continue to work hard on the practice court as we learn and grow from our competitive experiences.”
