Women’s Tennis Kicks Off Dual Season With Doubleheader at Home


Columbia, S.C. – ­South Carolina women’s tennis begins its dual season on Sunday with a doubleheader aginst Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian. The match against the Chanticleers will start at noon with the match against the Blue Hose following at 4:00 p.m.

Both matches will take place at the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center located at 523 Superior St. Free parking is available in the tennis center parking lot.

The Gamecocks are 7-0 all-time against Coastal Carolina and 2-0 all-time against Presbyterian. South Carolina’s last match against the Blue Hose was in 1985 with the Gamecocks sweeping the match 9-0.

This will be the first match of the spring season for both South Carolina and Coastal while Presbyterian is already 1-1 on the season with a 6-1 win at Queens and a 1-6 loss at Charlotte.

South Carolina boasts three players in the ITA singles rankings – No. 4 Sarah Hamner, No. 6 Ayana Akli, and No. 76 Shahar Biran. The team is coming off of a strong showing at the Carolina Kickoff where they put up 11 singles wins and six doubles wins. Both Akli and junior Olympe Lancelot were perfect at the event with three singles wins each and three doubles wins together.

Akli led the team in tournament play with a 13-4 singles record that included nine ranked wins. Lancelot led the team in doubles throughout tournament play with a 10-5 record that included wins with three different partners.
