Women’s Tennis produce strong showing at ITA Regionlas


GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Members of Florida Gulf Coast University’s women’s tennis team continued the Fall season at the ITA Regionals hosted by the University of Florida. The tournament was from Friday through Monday.
 
 “All four of our players competed at a very high level, giving them a chance to win matches against four of the nation’s top players,” assistant coach Kevin Miller said. “Ida became the first FGCU player to win two qualifying matches, and Fanny advanced the round featuring the top 32 in the Southeast.”

Ida Ferding highlighted the weekend by being the first Eagle in program history to qualify for the main draw. She first won her first-round match against University of North Florida’s Makela Jasmin 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Ferding then faced Laura Putz from Florida State University and won 6-2, 6-4. In her first match of the main draw, Ferding fell 7-5, 6-1.

Fanny Norin won her first match in the round of 64 by defeating Petja Drame 6-4, 6-1 from Florida International University. She then battled No. 16 Carly Briggs from Florida and was defeated 6-3, 6-2.

In the doubles competition, Jordana Ossa and Ferding lost with a close 8-7 decision in the final round of qualifying to Anslee Long and Alisa Lyshko from UNF. Paloma Goldmith and Norin fell 8-7 in their opening main draw doubles match to Ninon Martinache and Lindsay Tulenko of Georgia Southern University.

FGCU will be back in action at the Bonita Bay Classic on Nov. 3.
