ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After opening the spring season with a pair of home wins last weekend, the Navy women’s tennis team hits the road Saturday for a showdown with Richmond before returning home for a Sunday doubleheader with Morgan State and Villanova.
Opening the second weekend of action in Richmond, Va., the Midshipmen and Spiders are set for a 3 p.m. battle at the Raintree Swim and Racquet Club, while Navy hosts the Bears at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center before turning around and welcoming the Wildcats for a 2 p.m. match later that day.
Last Time Out
The Mids posted two victories last Saturday, defeating St. Bonaventure, 6-1, in the opener before surging to a 7-0 sweep of Saint Francis in the nightcap … Inside the friendly confines of the Tose Family Tennis Center, Navy won the No. 1 and No. 2 matches to claim the doubles point against the Bonnies, while sophomore Sia Chaudry, senior Samantha Johns, juniors Parvathi Shanker and Kate Lee and freshman Anna Jordaan all captured wins in their singles matches … Coming out victorious in all three doubles matches against the Red Flash, the Mids completed the sweep with singles wins from junior Emily Tannenbaum, senior captain Stella Ribaudo and the freshmen quartet of Manci Pal, Olivia Fermo, Makaila Cheng and Julia Lee … The wins moved Navy to 11-1 all-time against St. Bonaventure and 14-0 in the all-time series with Saint Francis.
Rewriting the Record Book Again
With her doubles and singles victories in last Saturday’s nightcap, Tannenbaum moved up in two categories in the program record book … The reigning Patriot League Player of the Year’s 69 career singles wins moved her past Emani Decquir for the fifth-most in program history … Additionally, Tannenbaum’s 123 combined wins between singles and doubles play in her career put her sixth in program history, four shy of tying Decquir for fifth all-time in that category.
Scouting Richmond
The Spiders began the spring with a pair of tough losses last week, falling 4-0 at No. 12-ranked Virginia on Thursday before suffering a 5-2 road loss to Georgetown despite singles wins from Andrea Campodonico and Carly Cohen in the top two spots … Richmond posted a 10-15 mark last season, going 3-2 in Atlantic 10 play and winning its first two matches in the A10 Tournament before falling in the conference semifinals … Campodonico and Leonor Oliveira both return after being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team in 2022-23.
Scouting Morgan State
A trip to Morgantown, W.Va., opened the spring for Morgan State, as the Bears were handed a 7-0 defeat by West Virginia last Saturday … Morgan State will host Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday before traveling to Annapolis for Sunday’s contest … Last year’s squad went 8-12 overall and 3-3 in MEAC action … The Bears return a pair of All-MEAC Second Teamers in Hannah Smith and Lauryn Hall.
Scouting Villanova
Opening the spring with a 7-0 loss to Penn last Sunday, the Wildcats are set for a Saturday showdown with Delaware before making trek down to Annapolis … Villanova tallied an 8-14 overall record last season and went 1-5 against Big East foes before falling in the first round of the conference tournament to Marquette.

Navy is 4-5 in the all-time series with Richmond, as the last meeting between the Spiders and Mids was a 4-3 Richmond win in Annapolis on March 28, 2021 … The Mids are 9-0 all-time over Morgan State, with the most recent meeting being a 7-0 Navy win on Jan. 29, 2023 … Navy also holds a 10-0 edge in the all-time series with Villanova, with the last matchup between the schools turning out to be a 6-1 Navy victory on Jan. 30, 2022.
