BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Bucknell women’s tennis team pulled off a clean 7-0 sweep of Binghamton to earn its first win of the spring Sunday morning. Not only did the Bison win all three doubles matches and all six in singles, they won each singles match in straight sets. Bucknell shut the Bearcats out in four singles sets throughout the day.
Bucknell was just as strong in doubles play, as Anna Lajos and Caroline Marcus opened the match with a 6-0 win on court three. Whitney King and Abby Platt then clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Binghamton’s top tandem of Caterina Casadei and Loren Cuomo on court one. King and Platt improved to 11-0 as a team this season. Tyne Miller and Madi Sebulsky rounded out the doubles wins with a 6-2 victory on court two.
Three Bison gave up just one game in their singles victories. Miller opened with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win on court four over Maria Pereira, moving to 8-5 on the season. King also won by a 6-0, 6-1 decision, beating Binghamton’s No. 1, Cuomo. It was Platt who pulled off the match-clinching win on court three, as the sophomore defeated Abby Ackroyd 6-2, 6-0.
Mirra Manolov remained unbeaten in singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Samantha Jaros on court six, and rookie Jaycie Mair moved to 7-3 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Nitya Vyas on court five. Wrapping up the day for the Bison was Anna Lajos, who remains the team’s wins leader at 9-3 following a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Casadei at No. 2 singles.
Bucknell is off next weekend and returns to competition on Friday, Feb. 2 to take on Washington and Lee in Lexington, Va. The Bison then head to the state’s capital the following day to face Richmond.
