LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women’s tennis team swept two contests Friday in the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex, rallying past Middle Tennessee 4-3 in a marathon match before rolling to a 7-0 win over the University of the Cumberlands.
Bellarmine (2-4) earned its first two wins of the season with the sweep.
Against Middle Tennessee (2-2), the Knights were trailing 3-2 with no more room to falter, and freshmen Nikola Kollaritsch and Lillie Willis delivered under pressure, as Kollaritsch topped Eloise Swarbrick 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to even things up and Willis regrouped after dropping the first set 2-6 to Rutuja Chaphalkar to capture the next two by identical 6-4 margins at No. 6 to clinch the match.
Freshmen Marika Caruk and Erica Kanna Hagi also claimed singles wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Caruk took down Sana Garakani 6-4, 6-2 and Hagi outlasted Ilaria Sposetti 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4).
Although Middle Tennessee secured the doubles point, Hagi and junior Yeva Kramarova were victorious 6-3 over Lilly-Sophie Schmidt/Cara Szilasi at No. 3.
Bellarmine went undefeated against Cumberlands. From Nos. 1-6 singles, Knights victories were earned by junior Ekaterina Tikhonko, Caruk, sophomore Vendula Kryslova, Kramarova, Kollaritsch and sophomore Shu Grosso.
Bellarmine’s doubles teams combined to go 18-3 in their sets. Tikhonko/Kryslova were victorious at No. 1, Caruk/Kollaritsch at No. 2 and Hagi/Kramarova at No. 3.
Bellarmine will compete at 1 p.m. (ET) Friday at Valparaiso.
