Women’s Tennis Well Represented at ITA Atlantic Regionals


ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Seven Midshipmen will make the trip to Liberty University this week, as the Navy women’s tennis team is set to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regional Championship from Oct. 19-23 at the Liberty Tennis Complex in Lynchburg, Va.
 
A collection of five singles players and three doubles teams will represent the Mids at the Atlantic Regional, as action gets underway Thursday. Competing for Navy in the main singles draw is junior Emily Tannenbaum, while seniors Stella Ribaudo and Samantha Johns, junior Sylvia Eklund and sophomore Sia Chaudry will look to join Tannenbaum by advancing in the qualifying draw. The pairings of Tannenbaum with Ribaudo, Johns with Chaudry and juniors Kate Lee and Parvathi Shanker will also compete in the main doubles draw for the Mids.
 
Regional Layout
Thursday opens with two rounds of qualifying singles play, while Friday starts with the round-of-64 for doubles action and the singles rounds-of-64 and 32 … Saturday’s slate includes two more rounds of doubles play and the singles round-of-16 in addition to the start of consolation draws, and Sunday will see consolation action continue while the doubles quarterfinals and semifinals preceded the singles quarterfinals … Action wraps on Monday with the doubles finals before the semifinals and finals of the main singles draw … Singles main draw matches will be three full sets, while doubles main draw matches will be 8-game pro sets until the semifinals, with the doubles semifinals and finals being best-of-three sets with a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a full third set … Qualifying singles matches will have a match tiebreak in lieu of a full third set.
 
The Field
Along with Navy and host Liberty, the ITA Atlantic Regional will feature players from Delaware, George Mason, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, JMU, Loyola, Marshall, Maryland, Morgan State, Mount St. Mary’s, Norfolk State, ODU, Penn State, Radford, Richmond, Saint Joseph’s, Towson, VCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and William & Mary.
 
Last Time Out
Led by Chaudry going 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles partnered with Johns, the Mids posted a 10-8 overall record last weekend at the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic, tallying a 6-6 mark in singles competition and 4-2 mark on the doubles courts while facing opponents from Loyola Marymount, San Diego, UC San Diego and Denver … Ribaudo also ended with a winning record for the three-day trip, going 2-1 in both singles play and in doubles action alongside Tannenbaum … At the conclusion of the tournament, Chaudry was given the SDVTC Sportsmanship Award while Tannenbaum received the SDVTC Leadership Award.
 
ITA Regional History
This will be the third ITA Regional appearance for Ribaudo and Tannenbaum, while Chaudry, Eklund and Johns are all set for their second appearances in the ITA Regionals … This week marks the ITA Regional debut for both Lee and Shanker … With four Mids making the trek to the 2022 ITA Atlantic Regional at Virginia Tech, Navy went a combined 6-6 in singles play and 1-3 in doubles action … Tannenbaum and then-senior Casey Accola both went 2-1 in singles while the duo also split their two doubles matches … Chaudry and Ribaudo also won their opening qualifying matches before losing the next two … The 2021 ITA Atlantic Regional was hosted by the Mids at the Brigade Sports Complex, with Tannenbaum and going 3-0 in the singles main draw to earn a spot at the ITA Super Regionals, while Ribaudo also found success in singles competition with a pair of wins before falling in the round-of-32.
 
Navy Fall Leaders
Tannenbaum paces the team with 11 singles wins, while Chaudry (nine) and Johns (eight) are behind her in singles victories … Chaudry’s only two losses in singles play this fall have both come against Tannenbaum … After going 5-5 last season as a pairing, Lee and Shanker are 5-3 this season in a team-high eight doubles matches, while Ribaudo and Tannenbaum have matched them with an identical 5-3 doubles mark.
