The post-holiday slump has definitely begun at the box office, but Timothée Chalamet’s musical Wonka and the new horror film Night Swim are keeping things moving.
Wonka maintains his lead.
Despite facing its first rival since its December launch, Wonka remains the box office king. This weekend, Warner Bros.’ colorful origin story for the renowned chocolatier is expected to bring in another $15 million to $16 million, bringing its domestic total to $165 million.
The film’s engaging songs and Chalamet’s captivating performance appear to be keeping fans interested.
Night Swim is a good dive.
Night Swim, the weekend’s sole new wide film, managed a decent $12.5 million launch from 3,250 locations, thanks to horror powerhouses Jason Blum and James Wan. While it did not set the world on fire, the picture starring Wyatt Russell beat critics’ expectations, earning a C CinemaScore. Night Swim may hardly be a summer blockbuster, but it may have a devoted following among genre lovers.
Migration, the animated family film, remains in third place, with a projected $10.5 million to $11 million this weekend. This would boost its domestic total to more than $78 million, demonstrating that joyful animation can still draw crowds after the holiday season has passed.
Overall, the box office is down around 16% from previous weekend, as predicted following the holiday season.
However, with a couple more new films expected next week, including M Night Shyamalan’s thriller Knock at the Cabin, the doldrums could be over.
