On Friday, a Yolo Superior Court judge ruled that the Woodland teen who caused a three-car crash last year that killed two and injured at least 8 others will remain in custody until age 19.
The teen, who was 13 at the time of the accident, caused a horrific and fiery multi-car accident on the intersection of Court and College Street that ultimately left Tina Vital, 43, and her 4-year-old granddaughter Adalina Lilah Perez dead. Four others were injured in Vital’s car, while six were in a second car.
According to the Yolo County District Attorney’s office, Judge Paul Richardson ruled that continued detention for the minor is appropriate until he turned 19, although the maximum period of detention was until age 21. The teen will serve the time at the juvenile detention facility in Woodland.
After a year-long trial and a guilty ruling last month, a dozen total counts were sustained, including two counts of vehicular manslaughter, eight counts of evading police, driving without a license, stealing a car and endangering the health of a child.
Restitution was determined and ordered for four of the other victims in the crash amounting to $11,195.82. The amount is still to be ordered for the six additional victims.
California juvenile trials do not go before a jury, so a judge determines whether young defendants did what they’re accused of.
On April 8, 2023, a Woodland Police Department officer spotted a vehicle downtown that was being driven erratically. According to the WPD’s statement, the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver would not comply.
The officer pursued the car to the intersection of College and Court Streets, where it collided with two other vehicles and caused two cars to catch on fire at about 4:27 p.m.
