EFFINGHAM — The Effingham Public Library will host a collection of woodcarvings, paintings and drawings of iconic artist Shirley Mensch. Pieces for this exhibit have been curated from private collections and will be on display at the library through the month of November.
Mensch, who passed away in 2019, was a nationally known woodcarver lauding a career in art that spanned 30 years. Formally educated as a commercial artist at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, she was a self-taught wood carver. Starting in 1974, making crude primitive animals, Shirley spent years developing her style and expanding her designs. Two years later, relocating to Exeter, she spent the next several years concentrating on her work, including a series of historic house paintings for Goodwins of Exeter.
