Building structures with curves is no simple task, as demonstrated by the Sphere. Throughout history, ancient civilizations struggled to create arches, let alone spherical structures. The key lies in supporting the structure until it can hold its shape independently. In the case of the Sphere, this monumental feat happened twice.
The auditorium’s dome required 32 trusses, each weighing a staggering 100 tons, to support the structure. Above it, an exosphere rises 30 percent taller than the dome. Pouring concrete into this massive structure and installing countless LEDs, both inside and out, highlights the sheer scale of the project.
The Ultimate Viewing Experience
Step inside the Sphere, and you’ll be greeted by the world’s most extensive high-resolution screen. This internal screen boasts an astonishing 16K resolution across its expansive 14,900 square meters (160,000 square feet) surface.
Each diode is meticulously positioned, mere millimeters away from its neighbor, delivering an unparalleled viewing experience. The meticulous precision required to achieve this level of perfection is astounding. With 189 million diodes spread across an area equivalent to two soccer pitches, not a single one can deviate by more than the thickness of a blade of grass.
Braving the Elements
The challenges didn’t end with the internal screen. The exterior of the Sphere demanded equally complex technology, as it would be exposed to the elements.
The solution came in the form of 1.23 million sealed LED pucks, each secured with non-reflective black silicone. These pucks are designed for easy replacement should they malfunction, employing a straightforward push/pop/twist mechanism for installation and removal.
Expanding Spherical Wonders
The Sphere in Las Vegas is just the beginning. Plans are underway for more spherical structures, with proposals already on the table for a similar project in London, UK, and intentions to replicate this technological wonder in other locations.
