Starting from 8 January 2023, mainland China has implemented Category B control for covid-19 infections.3 Along with the lifting of the epidemic control measures, the entertainment media industry has seen a significant recovery.
According to the data monitoring and analysis of the performance ticketing information collection platform of the China Performing Arts Industry Association, in the first half of 2023, the number of commercial performances (excluding performances in entertainment venues) nationwide was 193,300, an increase of 400.86 per cent compared with the same period in the previous year; the box office revenue of the performances was 16.793 billion yuan, an increase of 673.49 per cent compared with the same period in the previous year; and the number of audience members was 62.2366 million, an increase of more than 10 times compared with the previous year.4 Among them, concerts and music festivals are soaring in popularity, and their effect of boosting local consumption is outstanding; for example, the total audience at the Tianjin stop of Jay Chou’s concert was 185,000, and the cumulative comprehensive consumption was driven by more than 3 billion yuan.5
The box office of summer 2023 was also outstanding with the total box office reaching 20.618 billion yuan, a 16 per cent increase compared with the previous record of the highest summer box office record in 2019, the number of moviegoers reached 504 million; single-day box office breaking the 100-million record continued for 72 consecutive days, an increase of 95 per cent compared with the previous 37 consecutive million-box-office days in 2019.6
While the industry was seeing its silver lining, the laws and regulations in the field of entertainment media were also facing significant changes. The continuous evolution of laws and regulations not only reflects the changes in the industry, but also reciprocally shapes the industry, and promotes the healthy and orderly development of the industry.
