You can now legally keep driving your dead spouse’s car in N.J. thanks to a law Gov. Murphy just signed

Widows in New Jersey will now be legally allowed to keep driving their deceased spouse’s car without having to head to the DMV quickly after their death, under a bipartisan law Gov. Phil Murphy recently signed.

Under previous state law, a surviving spouse was required to renew the registration of their deceased husband or wife’s car within 30 days of their death if they wanted to keep driving it without risking a ticket.

The new law (A1550), which Murphy signed Monday, aims to make the grieving period less cumbersome for widows by doing away with that timeframe and letting them continue using the car until the registration’s original expiration date.
