Zheng Qinwen books maiden Grand Slam final berth at Australian Open | Tennis News

NEW DELHI: China’s Zheng Qinwen on Thursday registered a significant victory over Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska, advancing to the final of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Her triumph marks the first time in a decade that a Chinese player has reached the final of this prestigious tournament, setting up a showdown against defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.
As the 12th seed, Zheng displayed a composed and controlled performance on Rod Laver Arena, defeating Yastremska with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 42 minutes. This victory propels her into the world’s top 10 in the upcoming rankings update.
Zheng’s achievement carries significant historical weight as she becomes the first Chinese player to reach the final at Melbourne Park since her idol, Li Na, who clinched the title in 2014. Her impressive run to the final reflects her talent and determination, marking a milestone moment for Chinese tennis on the international stage.
“I’m super excited to have such a great performance today and arrive in the final,” said the 21-year-old, who had previously never been beyond the quarter-finals at a Grand Slam.
“My opponent was playing unbelievable tennis and had a really good baseline stroke. It is tough to explain my feelings now.”
In the evening clash on Rod Laver Arena, Yastremska initially broke Zheng’s serve but faced an immediate setback by serving four double faults in the next game, surrendering her advantage.
Zheng, buoyed by strong support from the Chinese contingent in the crowd, secured another break in the seventh game. Following this, Yastremska left the court, seemingly for treatment related to a stomach issue causing her discomfort.
Despite the medical timeout, Zheng held on to take the first set. Yastremska left the court again between sets. In the second set, the Ukrainian, aiming to become only the second qualifier in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam final after Emma Raducanu in 2021, lost her serve in the third game.
Although she managed to break back and level at 2-2, Zheng broke her to love in the seventh game, a crucial moment that ultimately determined the outcome. Zheng seized the opportunity, winning on her first match point and securing a spot in Saturday’s final.
This victory sets up a historic final against defending champion Sabalenka, and Zheng’s impressive performance showcases her resilience and determination on the Grand Slam stage.
