(NewsNation) — A Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables and healthy fats, could protect against male infertility, according to recent research.
A systematic review of 10 studies concluded that eating foods rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances could have fertility benefits. Those foods can reduce bodily stress caused by low antioxidant levels and protect against negative effects such stress can have on sperm, according to the review.
Mediterranean diets often consist of fresh seasonal produce, plant-based foods, legumes, olive oil, nuts, whole grains and a moderate amount of animal products such as eggs, dairy, poultry and fish, according to the review.
About 15% of the world’s population, or 70 million couples of reproductive age, are impacted by fertility issues, the review noted.
Since healthy eating habits can help guard against infertility, couples may consider dietary counseling for help conceiving, according to the review.
