Another item to add to your cholesterol-lowering shopping list is oats. Dr Caudle said: “The thing about oatmeal or oats is that they have a lot of soluble fibre.
“Soluble fibre is really important with cholesterol because it helps decrease the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream.”
3. Salmon
The doctor explained that consuming salmon will boost your levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which will help lower triglycerides – a form of cholesterol. She added: “If you’re not interested in salmon, you can get other types of fatty fish like mackerel, herring, tuna, trout. Those are some good options.”
4. Fruits
Similarly to beans and oats, the magic of fruit on cholesterol comes down to fibre. Dr Caudle said: “Fruits have pectin, pectin has soluble fibre, which helps decrease the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream.”
She recommended opting for options like apples, strawberries, and citrus fruits.
5. Aubergine and okra
The doctor added that aubergine and okra are “not only low-calorie vegetables”, but they are also “good sources” of soluble fibre, which will help you lower your cholesterol.
