In a bizzare incident coming out of the National Capital, a 26-year-old bodybuilder has eaten 39 coins and 37 magnets in an attempt to achieve fast gains. This incident led to the man to the hospitals and ultimately to the surgery room.

The patient who hails from Delhi, had apparently consumed these items under the belief that zinc is beneficial in building the body. A number of days after the incident he finally reported the case to a hospital saying that he had been experiencing repeated vomiting and abdominal pain for more than 20 days, along with the inability to eat anything.

The doctors at Delhi’s Sir Gangaram hospital said that they were informed of the patient’s acts by his relatives and were later confirmed by a CT scan. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the doctors opted for immediate surgery of the patient and were thankfully successful in removing the astonishing number of instruments the patient had swallowed.

One of the performing doctors, Dr Mittal said that the patient was immediately prepared for surgery and they discovered the magnets and coins were present in the small intestine in two different loops during the operation. He further added that the magnetic effect had pulled the two loops together, resulting in erosion and hence the immense discomfort.

Interestingly, the patient has previously been diagnosed with Schizophrenia, which might give some explanation to where the idea of consuming the coins came from, though nothing can be said for sure. Thankfully, he has now been discharged from the hospital after a week of post-surgery hospitalisation and is now doing well.
