A new spot for acai bowls, smoothies and more has opened in a busy Columbia retail and restaurant district.

Surf’s Up Acai Bowls opened its doors Saturday, March 16, at 504 Gervais St. in the Vista. That’s at the corner of Gervais and Huger streets, in the same building that also houses Rebel Dogs hot dog restaurant and other businesses.

“Surf’s Up Acai Bowls will bring unique alternatives to the Vista and we’re excited to have them open,” Vista Guild Executive Director Abby Anderson said in a statement. “They will be especially appealing to those who are looking for healthy snack options.”

The restaurant’s menu features a host of signature acai bowls, and patrons can also build a customized bowl. The menu also features smoothies, as well as acai mixes in waffle cones.

Among the many signatures offerings is the Waikiki Wave bowl, which features banana, pineapple, toasted coconut, coconut oil and organic granola.

“In every soft serve bowl of our acai, you’ll experience our commitment to natural goodness. Our acai, free from added sugars and trans fats, is made from 100% organic acai and 100% organic juices,” Surf’s Up says on its website. “This preserves its nutritional integrity, aligning with our philosophy of wholesome treats.”

Acai is a berry that’s often considered a superfood.

The acai spot has opened at what is a high-traffic intersection in the capital city. About 38,000 cars per day pass down Huger Street nearby, while about 32,000 car per day travel down that stretch of Gervais Street, according to state traffic count data.
