Livewell Wichita County to host free cooking class

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Livewell Wichita County is gearing up to celebrate National Nutrition Month with an event lined up for next Tuesday, March 26.

As part of the nationwide initiative promoting healthy eating, Livewell Wichita County is offering a free cooking class aimed at educating attendees while having fun in the kitchen.

Jelecia Miller, the program manager for Livewell, emphasizes the primary goal of the event is community education. Contrary to common misconceptions, she asserts that adopting a healthy lifestyle doesn’t necessarily require extensive effort or a hefty budget. The cooking class will delve into practical tips on managing a healthy lifestyle for those unsure where to start, providing an interactive and hands-on learning experience.

“People can expect a lot of jokes, a lot of fun, a lot of information. The main thing is we want people to know that they have options, and all of the food we purchase is from Walmart and it’s on a strict budget,” Miller said.

The organizers hope that these events will draw people to the Wichita Falls Wichita County Health District to explore the available options for healthier living. While Livewell Wichita County regularly hosts such classes, what sets this one apart is the addition of a chili competition. Attendees will have the opportunity to judge a showdown between vegan and carnivore chili dishes.

Miller, who will be handling the plant-based version of the chili, sees the competition as an opportunity to teach about the nutritional value of the dish.

“Well, we always say health is wealth. So when you are healthy, you are more physically active, and you’re more engaged with your community members, your family, your friends. When you are healthy and eating nutritious foods, you feel better inside and out,” Miller emphasized.

Furthermore, Miller ensures that all recipes cooked in these classes are available in print or video format on their website, encouraging everyone to replicate and personalize the dishes for their families to enjoy.

The event promises to be both educational and entertaining, serving as a reminder that healthy living can be accessible and enjoyable for all.

The class will be held at the Wichita Falls Wichita County Health District from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Click here to register.
