Albemarle elementary school encouraging students to eat healthy

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) – Albemarle County Public Schools is featuring locally-grown food in its cafeterias.

ACPS aims to teach students more about healthy eating, while also supporting local agriculture.

Some students say they feel like Popeye after eating the kale salad and tofu samples.

“They were a little surprise, but they were willing to try it,” Baker-Butler Elementary School Kitchen Manager Nina Gsell said Tuesday, October 24. “Then they ended up really liking it.”

Gsell says most kids are just starting to learn what tastes good for them.

“A lot of the kids just thought they were ugly apples, and we’re like, ‘This is an Asian pear,’ and they actually love it,” the manager said.

ACPS will continue to offer these nutritious options moving forward.
