The YMCA of Collier County is proud to announce the launch of its Diabetes Prevention Program, empowering individuals to take control of their health and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This comprehensive program kicks off in January 2025, aligning with the YMCA’s ongoing commitment to promoting overall well-being within the community.“Type 2 diabetes is a serious yet preventable health condition impacting millions,” says Reilly Smith, Healthy Living Director at the YMCA of Collier County. “We recognize the importance of proactive measures, and we’re excited to offer this program as a resource for our community.” Designed for individuals at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is an evidence-based initiative focused on lasting lifestyle changes. Through a combination of physical activity, nutrition education, and group support, participants receive guidance from trained lifestyle coaches, access to valuable resources, and encouragement from a supportive community. “Our 12-month program engages participants in 16 core sessions, followed by monthly maintenance sessions, all centered around small, achievable lifestyle goals,” explains Smith. “With group support and expert coaching, participants learn to incorporate healthier eating, regular physical activity, and coping skills into their daily routines.” The curriculum is CDC-approved and aligns with the National Diabetes Prevention Program. Key program features include:
• Expert Guidance: Certified lifestyle coaches provide personalized support and guidance throughout the program.
• Group Support: A supportive community fosters motivation and keeps participants engaged.
• Nutrition Education: Participants gain practical knowledge about healthy eating habits for long-term well-being.
• Behavioral Change: The program addresses the behavioral aspects of lifestyle changes, empowering participants to overcome challenges and establish sustainable habits.
• Physical Activity: The program emphasizes regular physical activity tailored to individual abilities and preferences.
