Avoiding weight gain: Healthy eating tips for the holidays

HERE AT 915. THE LAST FEW WEKS OF THE YEAR ARE OFTEN FILLED WITH GATHERINGS AND FOODS THAT YOU MAY ONLY GET TO EAT ONCE A YEAR. SO IT CAN BE TEMPTING TO OVERINDULGE OUR NEXT LIVE GUEST IS HERE TO SHARE SOME TIPS TO HELP US ALL BE MORE MINDFUL GOING INTO THIS, LET’S SAY GOOD MORNING TO ANNETTE FRANE. SHE’S A REGISTERED DIETITIAN AT ATRIUM HEALTH, WAKE FOREST BAPTIST WEIGHT MANAGEMENT CENTER. GOOD MORNING ANNETTE. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. GOOD MORNING JACKIE. WELL, WE KNOW THERE ARE TEMPTING TREATS PRETTY MUCH STARTING AT HALLOWEEN ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE NEW YEAR. SO HOW CAN WE SET OURSELVES UP FOR SUCCESS TO NOT EAT EVERYTHING IN SIGHT? ULTIMATELY GET IT OUT OF SIGHT? RIGHT. YOU KNOW, IT’S EASY TO KEEP THAT LEFTOVER HALLOWEEN CANDY JUST LAYING AROUND ON THE COUNTER. SO PUT IT AWAY. DONATE IT. TAKE IT TO THE OFFICE. WHATEVER IT IS TO GET IT OUT OF YOUR LINE OF SIGHT. THAT’S GOING TO HELP YOU STAY MORE ON TRACK AND PUTTING THE HEALTHY THINGS IN YOUR LINE OF SIGHT. OKAY, WELL, WHAT ARE SOME OF THOSE HEALTHIER IDEAS FOR SNACKS AND MEALS DURING THE HOLIDAYS? YOU KNOW, I WISH I HAD LIKE THE MAGIC MEAL. UNFORTUNATELY, IT DOESN’T EXIST. BUT ULTIMATELY, YOU KNOW, KEEPING THOSE VEGGIES CUT UP ACCESSIBLE AT THE FRONT OF THE FRIDGE, NOT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BACK OF THE DRAWER WHERE YOU KNOW, IT TURNS INTO A SCIENCE EXPERIMENT. ALSO, RECOGNIZING THAT YOU DO NEED TO EAT MORE PROTEIN AND PLANT BASED FOODS AS A WAY YOU START. LOOKING TO KEEP YOURSELF ON TRACK AND FEELING POWERFUL AND HEALTHY THROUGH THIS SEASON BECAUSE IT’S NOT JUST ONE DAY. AS YOU MENTIONED, IT’S FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS, RIGHT? ARE THERE ANY SEASONAL VEGETABLES THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND THAT ARE PARTICULARLY FILLING OR WOULD HOLD UP? WELL, IF YOU PREP THEM, YOU KNOW, IN SEASON RIGHT NOW IS A LITTLE BIT TRICKY, BUT OFTENTIMES YOU CAN FIND VEGGIE TRAYS THAT ARE ALREADY PREPPED FOR YOU IN THE GROCERY STORE. SO YOU AREN’T THE ONE CUTTING. AND THAT CAN BE HELPFUL TO JUST HAVING THAT AVAILABLE. AND ALSO MAKING SURE YOU’RE DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER, RIGHT? BECAUSE THERE’S A LOT OF DRIKS TOO THAT USUALLY TEND TO COME IN THIS SEASON, WHETHER THEY BE SWEET DRINKS OR ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES. BUT AGAIN, CAN SNEAK IN SOME CALORIES. TOTALLY. SO HOW IMPORTANT IS IT WHEN IT COMES TO MODERATION OF THOSE SWEET TREATS? SOMETIMES YOU CAN’T RESIST. YOU CAN’T. BUT MAKE SURE YOU RECOGNIZE YOU’RE EATING. IT IS A VERY IMPORTANT THING, RIGHT? IF YOU’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A CONVERSATION, PAUSE THAT CONVERSATION AND TAKE YOUR TIME AND ALSO MAKE SURE IT’S WORTH IT, RIGHT? DON’T FEEL OBLIGATED. JUST BECAUSE YOU THINK YOU NEED TO EAT IT. HOW CAN YOU EAT A FEW BITES? GET THE FILL THAT YOU NEED AND KEEP MOVING ON. NOW WHAT IF WE DO HAVE ONE OF THOSE NIGHTS WHERE YOU EAT MORE THAN YOU’RE USED TO, OR YOU HAD TOO MUCH TO DRINK, OR TOO MANY SWEET TREATS, OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT? HOW DOES ONE GET BACK ON TRACK AND NOT FEEL LIKE IT’S TOTALLY A LOST CAUSE? THE VERY NEXT DAY, RIGHT? WE GOT TO GET BACK ON TRACK. SO AGAIN, PROTEIN, VEGETABLE BASED MEALS AND SNACKS, MAKING SURE YOU’RE DRINKING PLENTY ENOUGH WATER AND YOU JUST HIT IT. GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP RIGHT. BECAUSE THAT CAN ALSO BE AN EASY WAY FOR TREATS AND OVERINDULGENCE TO CREEP INTO IS JUST KIND OF FEEDING OURSELVES TO STAY AWAKE, TO GET THROUGH TO THE NEXT THING. GREAT. ANNETTE, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR AL
