Every morning, Kevin Costner starts his day with “a big cup of coffee.”
“Sometimes I’ll put whipped cream on top like a fifth grader,” the Yellowstone actor tells me in a recent Zoom interview. “But I’ll just have one cup. It’s really my private time in the morning before the kids are moving around. It’s where I do my best thinking.”
In his life, Costner maintains healthy habits (like limiting his alcohol intake) while prioritizing the foods and drinks he loves, including coffee. His partnership with Green Mountain Coffee has helped him keep to his routine. In fact, he’s helped create his own flavors with the brand: a Dark Roast Horizon Blend and a Mountainside Mocha Latte—the latter definitely satisfies the actor’s preference for sweets.
“I love the mocha,” he emphasizes. “I really didn’t drink coffee 10 years ago; it’s a real habit that I didn’t have. The problem was that going from place to place, it wasn’t consistent.” The star now brings a Keurig mini brewer on the road with him so he can have the same comforting cup wherever he’s filming.
With the weather cooling down, you’re more likely to see a cup of Joe in his hand. “Interestingly enough, I drink more coffee around Christmastime,” Costner shares. “You’re around the fire, you’re around family. It’s a good time of year.” And with the holidays coming up, I asked the actor for his favorite Thanksgiving dishes: dressing and pie were most notable.
In fact, a slice of apple pie is Costner’s favorite snack, no matter the occasion.
“I love apple pies like Sara Lee or Marie Callender’s; everything else is too gourmet for me,” he admits. “I think warm apple pie is really my favorite dessert.” (Side note: While he prefers store-bought, our Deep-Dish Apple Pie is worth the effort—and has rave reviews for a reason.) But à la mode takes it too far, even for Costner’s sweet tooth. He shares that he doesn’t like “mixing [his] pleasures.”
“I’d rather put ice cream in my coffee than on my apple pie,” he says. And when I asked if he’d consider putting cheese on his pie, diner-style, Costner laughed: “I’d flick the cheese right off.”

A huge episode of Yellowstone just aired last weekend, so you may be wondering what’s next for Costner. Spoiler: It’s more coffee and more flavors with Green Mountain.
“We’re kind of playing with a citrus idea that I like very much, I don’t know if we’re going to end up doing it,” he says. With orange juice-espresso drinks being all the rage on TikTok, I’m crossing my fingers on that idea.
