HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – For active gym-goers, a full body workout at the gym can feel like it takes hours… Not to mention a sometimes costly membership.
But at the Smith River Sports Complex, anyone can get in a full body workout with state-of-the-art equipment in just seven minutes at no charge.
This year, Henry County launched it’s healthy living initiative after Public Information Officer Brandon Martin said the county was seeing trends of higher levels of obesity and chronic heart disease.
“We decided that we want to do something to try to lower those cases,” said Martin. “Another aspect of that is only 26% of our population said that they had access to exercise equipment. So this was kind of an all-in-one package.”
The newly built Fitness Court is a physical version of that initiative, offering world-class equipment that allows people to use their own body weight for a complete workout.
“It doesn’t matter your fitness level or your knowledge of exercises. You can come here, you can download the app [and] it will be a coach in your pocket. So it will walk you through the entire thing,” said Martin.
It’s seven exercises in just seven minutes plus hundreds of ways you can use each station to reach workout goals.
“We’ve had a tremendously positive response from our residents so far on social media, said Martin. ”Anytime someone stops our parks and rec director, they tell them how much they love it.”
It’s the newest addition to the healthy living project but Martin said there’s more to come.
“We do have a couple of initiatives down the pipeline that we hope to roll out to hopefully get people to eat better and make other wise decisions as far as getting out into the wild and just enjoying life,” said Martin.
