‘Just stick with it’: Expert shares New Year fitness resolution advice

A local fitness and health expert is offering tips and advice to stick with your New Year fitness resolutions.

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — For those who kicked off 2025 on a new fitness journey, “just stick with it,” says Kris Tingley, personal trainer and health and wellness specialist at the David D. Hunting YMCA in downtown Grand Rapids.

Tingley has over 30 years of experience teaching and leading people with fitness goals to a happy, healthy heart for a better lifestyle. She says for decades, she’s seen the repeated patterns of fitness topping out New Year resolutions.

“Never ever give up! Keep moving, keep strong, keep active,” said Tingley.

“Take it slow. It looks intimidating, so take it a step at a time. Don’t let (the gym) intimidate you. You can start with the equipment slowly, you can start into a class, there’s something for everyone.”

Studies show people tend to fall off their fitness journey just weeks into the new year. The local fitness expert says she encourages her clients to stay consistent, find an accountability partner and a well-equipped facility to help execute fitness plans.

“There is a workout for everyone. Approach a personal trainer if you’d like, we are here to help you,” she said.

Tingley conducts classes and has been training at the David D. Hunting YMCA for nearly 10 years.

“It is a good thing to be here, this is like a family gym. There’s something for everyone here, like pickleball, weights, and the classes, there’s something for everyone,” says Tingley.

Although the new year is already underway, she says it’s never too late to start your fitness journey. You can start today by working on a happy, healthy heart.

The Greater Grand Rapids YMCA organization takes pride in supporting healthy living in the community. For more information on starting your fitness journey with the Y click here.
