Halloween kicks off the season of eating. Here’s some diet tricks to keep you healthy during the holidays.
GREENSBORO, N.C. — We’re finally here! Halloween kicks off the season of feast. From now until January 1st, people will dive into large feasts for the holidays, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Nutritionist, Rima Kleiner, MS, RDN, LDN, meets with us to discuss healthy tips for seasonal feasting, or as she calls it, the “season of eating”.
TIP 1 – Line your stomach with a protein-rich meal before eating candy
It’s advised to eat a protein-rich meal before you enjoy your sweets. Kleiner says you should start the morning off with a high-protein breakfast. You want to eat things like eggs, lean meats, nuts, and oats.
TIP 2 – Stay hydrated.
You also need to stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water. How much is enough? Kleiner says you should drink water throughout the day. Kleiner says you can take your weight in pounds and divide it in half. The answer will tell you how much water in ounces you need to intake a day.
TIP 3 – Make plans to enjoy a treat from the stash.
Once you have eaten your high-protein meal, Kleiner says you should come up with a plan to enjoy your sweets. You could plan out when you will eat your treat and what that particular treat will be. You should have a designated place for your treats. Do not have them scattered everywhere for easy access. If you’re out and about, stash your treats for the planned time. It creates the feeling that you’re rewarding yourself.
TIP 4 – Eat healthy fiber.
You should include some high-fiber foods in your meals, to keep a healthy balance. Some foods include bananas, sweet potatoes, and beans.
TIP 5 – Move after eating big meals.
After you enjoy your holiday feast, get out and do a simple exercise. Kleiner recommends moving for at least 10 – 20 minutes to get your metabolism running. It doesn’t have to be a long hard-core workout. It can be something as simple as walking, a quick jog, or even simple leg exercises like squats.
