Northfield trustees green-light new fitness facility on Happ Road

A fitness company that got its start in nearby Northbrook is now soon headed to Northfield.

Village trustees during their Tuesday, March 18 regular meeting unanimously approved a special-use request that will allow APX Training Systems to open a new location of its fitness facility at 314 Happ Road.

The facility will soon occupy an approximately 1,300 square foot space in the mixed-use commercial/residential building on Happ. The space was previously occupied by the interior design store Maria Isasi.

Sterling Stalnaker, the owner of APX Training Systems, said in application materials that he started his career in fitness as a personal trainer in the North Shore 10 years ago.

“While there are many businesses that provide fitness experiences for North Shore residents, there are very few that emphasize the importance of movement, mobility and strength in overall health and wellness,” he said.

According to a village memo from Steve Gutierrez, Northfield’s director of community development, APX Training Systems will also be leasing the basement of its space.

Stalnaker told trustees during the March 18 meeting that he hopes to open the Northfield location in mid-April.

The proposed hours of operation for the facility are 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday. There will be a maximum of nine people in the space at one time, per application details. Nearly 80 percent of the facility’s training sessions are one-on-one.

“I hope that by helping people train and recover, our facility will allow the residents of Northfield to truly take advantage of all the wonderful recreational facilities for sports like golf, tennis, and pickleball that Northfield has to offer,” Stalnaker said in his application letter. “I truly feel like Apx Training Systems is a perfect location and fit for the area.”
