DELAWARE COUNTY, Ind. — A 55-year-old fitness enthusiast was killed in a crash Friday morning while riding her bike in Delaware County.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said Jen Southerland, described as an avid cyclist, runner and swimmer, was riding her bike on her routine mourning ride on Walnut Street, just south of County Road 1000 North, when she was hit by a car from behind around 6:15 a.m. April 4.

Deputies said the car’s driver, identified as a 72-year-old woman from Delaware County, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. She was transported to Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital for a blood draw, which is standard protocol.

The sheriff’s crash reconstruction team is investigating what led up to the crash.

“This tragic crash is deeply personal. The Southerland family are dear friends, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” Delaware County Chief Deputy Jeff Stanley said.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is urging all drivers to remain vigilant and share the road safely with cyclists and pedestrians.
