UNFI makes loyalty play with ‘healthy’ shelf tag app

United Natural Foods Inc. is betting on health-conscious consumers with the launch of  a new app that allows shoppers to scan product labels and receive info on the product’s nutrition and sustainability footprint.

UNFI announced Thursday that it is partnering with food intelligence company GreenChoice PBC on the new app, which the Providence, R.I. wholesaler sees as a tool to build loyalty and offer personalization when it comes to shopper health and diet choices.

In addition to giving shoppers product health info, the white-label mobile app also provides a score which rates foods based on science-based industry standards for nutritional density, ingredient processing, ingredient safety, and climate footprint. By scanning QR codes, shoppers can see the score and receive personalized recommendations for healthier alternatives.

The new app launch feels in line with UNFI’s promise in recent months to increase value for both customers and suppliers.

UNFI has also gone through a recent identity revamp. In January, the wholesaler split its wholesale business into natural/organic and conventional grocery divisions. In the past year, the distributor has also placed a greater emphasis on its tech products, including a new retail media network launched last May.
